Holy Week Music
Palm Sunday, March 28: Worship began with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man as the children handed out palms to all. The Children’s Choir sang “Let the Whole Creation Cry Alleluia!,” a piece composed by Joanne Brown Ledoux. The Sanctuary Choir sang “Then Will the Very Rocks Cry Out” by contemporary composer Mark Hayes.
Maundy Thursday, April 1: American composer William Billings’ The Passion and Resurrection of Our Lord, “When Jesus Wept” set the tone for worship. Grace Buckler was a soloist with the Sanctuary Choir singing “What Wondrous Love Is This” arranged by Paul Christiansen. She began with her Nigerian translation of the hymn. “Behold the Lamb of God” by Craig Courtney has become a classic anthem for choirs.
Easter Sunday, April 4: The Nadulmok Community Church of Washington Choir (the choir of the Korean Church that worships in our building) joined the Sanctuary Choir. Music for the morning included “The Easter Song” by Anne Herring, “A New Hallelujah” from contemporary composer Michael W. Smith, Paul Baloche and Debbie Smith as well as “Prelude in D-flat” by Sergei Rachmaninoff.
During the Easter Sunday service, the congregation was invited to bring fresh flowers to place on the cross in celebration of Christ’s victory over death.
