Music Ministry Numerous people are involved in the music ministry at University Baptist Church. Choral groups include the Sanctuary Choir, Praise Team, Handbell Choir, and Children's Choir. Instrumentalists and handbells support the weekly worship services. Soloists from across the D.C., Virginia and Maryland area grace worship as to those in various small ensembles, including a barbershop quartet!
All choirs are open to new members at any time. Most choirs begin a new repertoire in September and January. If you would like to be a part of the Praise Team or participate as an instrumentalist/ vocalist in worship, please see Mark McIntyre.
Sanctuary Choir The Sanctuary Choir leads in worship on a weekly basis. The choir sings music from classical to contemporary, from unison to multiple parts and from short hymns and choruses to anthems and large choral works. In partnership with Zion Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., the choir has grown in their ability to sing spiritals and black gospel music. Favorite composers of the choir are Gabriel Faure, John Rutter, Richard Smallwood, Marty Haugen, Glenn Burleign and Darlene Zschech. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 7:10 p.m. in the choir room.
Praise Team Looking for additional members, the Praise Team focuses on leading the congregation in worship by enhancing the music the congregation has grown to love and found meaningful with contemporary music written by composers from around the world, such as Matt Redman, Twila Paris, Brian Doerksen and Kirk Franklin. Rehearsal times and days vary according to schedules.
Handbell Choir The Handbell Choir rings two-and-a-half octaves of Malmark Handbells and rehearses on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Ringing a variety of music, this group enjoys such favorites as Handel's Allegro and the popular Lord, I Lift Your Name on High.
Vocalists/Instrumentalists Male and female . . . young and old . . . all grace the worship services at University Baptist. From professional singers and players to those just learning to use their voices and instruments to praise God, one can hear hymns, choruses, spirituals, gospel, classical and even barbershop quartet music glorifying God.
Children's Choir Full of energy and vitality, older preschoolers through 5th grade children sing their hearts out every Wednesday evening from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. in the choir room. They enjoy learning creative movement and sign language, playing instruments singing and praising God!
