The Lonesome Valley Ramblers
The Lonesome Valley Ramblers Perform at Maryland Day Concert
By Curt Ramsey-Lucas
(June, 2010)

Curt Ramsey-Lucas
On Saturday, April 30, The Lonesome Valley Ramblers performed at the Faith in College Park Concert in the University of Maryland's Memorial Chapel. The concert, with bands and choirs representing area congregations, was organized by the campus ministries of the University of Maryland in conjunction with Maryland Day.

The Ramblers, including UBC members Curt Lucas (guitar and vocals), Daniel Rodgerson (guitar), and Ben Warner (drums), and Andrew Widman (bass) of University Park, performed two original songs - "Now I See" and "Like a Freight Train." The concert was well attended and The Ramblers were well received. Plans are already underway for a larger, outdoor, concert in conjunction with next year's Maryland Day. The Ramblers are currently recording the songs they performed, plus a third, to be released sometime this summer.

Lobby
Steny Hoyer

Children in Rep. Hoyer's Office
On Friday, November 12, 2010 a group of children ages 6 - 12 from University Baptist Church went to Congressman Steny Hoyer's office in Washington DC to lobby for a cause which we feel strongly about. The group consisted of Jonah, Samuel, Noah, Shawn, Matthew, Joanna and me.

We went because we feel that in order to eliminate child poverty in the United States, we need more help than a single church or even a whole group of churches, can do on their own, so we went to the government.

Our meeting in Congressman Hoyer's office was brief, but to the point. We got to meet with Amy Shultz, the senior aide to Congressman Hoyer, and she gave us wonderful ideas. Ms. Shultz listened to us the whole way through and seemed to really relate to what we where saying.

I hope that our trip was not in vain and something will be done to eliminate child poverty.

Meeting Steny Hoyer
By Noah
(September 2010)

Rep. Steny Hoyer and Noah
On Labor Day my family and I went to a party at a neighbor’s house. We knew our Congressman, Steny Hoyer, was going to be there so I was prepared to talk with him about the Penny Project.

I brought copies of an article from the Gazette and another from the Associated Baptist Press that tell the story of our church’s role in the Penny Project.

But I must admit I was a bit nervous. Rep. Hoyer was interested in what I had to say. He surprised me with a donation of $10 and asked me how many pennies that was. His question caught me off guard but I answered it correctly – 1000 pennies.

I asked him if he would meet with me and a group of youth from UBC to hear more about the Penny Project and our concerns. He said he would love to. It was great meeting Rep. Hoyer. I look forward to seeing him again soon.

Steny Hoyer represents the 5th Congressional District of Maryland.
He currently serves as the House Majority Leader.

Block Party Food Drive

By Curtis Ramsey-Lucas
(September 2010)

Some of the food collected at the Block Party Food Drive

Each fall our family coordinates a block party. We work with the City of Hyattsville to close our street one Saturday each September. The whole neighborhood gathers in the middle of our block and everyone brings food to share. The kids look forward to the one day of the year they can play freely in the street and we parents then have to remind them the rest of the year why they cannot.

Last year we began a new tradition of asking our neighbors to bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items to donate to the Food Pantry here at UBC. We were hesitant to do so at first. We didn’t want to imply that our neighbors are otherwise uncharitable and we know some of our neighbors are members of other churches and faith traditions. We thought they might be uncomfortable making such a donation to a Baptist church, even though our food pantry is part of the larger Help by Phone food network of PG County.

We took a leap of faith last year and the response has been wonderful. To a person our neighbors think it’s a great idea. One commented, “It’s just the kind of thing we should be doing when we get together like this.” I think she’s exactly right. When we who have all that we need gather to share with one another, why not also do something that helps those in need of assistance?

This year our neighbors donated five shopping bags of food to our food pantry. Most of them will never worship in our sanctuary much less join our church. But their contribution is a benefit to our food pantry which helps our church be more effective in its mission. And through the act of giving our neighbors lives have been enriched. So I encourage you – look for opportunities to help others connect with the mission of University Baptist Church.
