How you Can Serve

Here is how you can get involved:
Prayer Shawl Ministry

Volunteers needed year-round

This is a ministry that provides knitted shawls to people experiencing grief or pain. Volunteers make the shawls and the church dedicates them in worship as symbols of the church’s prayers for the person in need.

Our Food Pantry

Every Monday-Thursday 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The community organization Help By Phone obtains food in bulk.  Church volunteers pick up the food once a month from Help By Phone and store it in our food pantry. The church supplements the food with donations.

Warm Nights

Volunteers needed in winter

A ministry to homeless individuals and families hosted by our church once a year for one week. During this week, church volunteers provide breakfast, lunch and dinner, access to showers and laundry facilities, and a place to sleep for around 35 homeless households registered through the Homeless Hotline of the Crisis Center.

Community Cafe

Every second Tuesday of the month

A free lunch program organized by Community Ministry and served at the First Methodist Church of Hyattsville that feeds around 70 individuals each weekday. Our church provides lunch and volunteers to serve.

Share food distribution

Volunteers needed in November and December

Twice a year, the church buys a bulk amount of food from the SHARE organization. Church volunteers pick up the food and bundle it to provide food for 40 to 50 households.  The church supplements each bundle with a grocery gift card.  Families in need of food register through our church office and church volunteers distribute the bundles to those families who come to the church on two specified Saturdays.

Day Shelter

Volunteers needed year-round

Once a month, our church volunteers serve lunch to 40 homeless or low-income households at the Day Shelter operated by Congregations United for Compassion and Empowerment and hosted at The University Christian Church. Our volunteers serve from 1:00 until 3:00 on a day assigned to them by Congregations United.
